Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay immediately was captivated with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay learned to be socially mindful from her mother. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma, and later directed the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English as well as African American studies. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was assigned and deciding to go after the field of publicity.
